From Shelter to Success: How Memphis Helped Me Rebuild My Life

There was a time in my life when I slept in my 1997 Black Mitsubishi Galant, parked outside what was then known as The MED Hospital in Downtown Memphis, now Regional One Hospital. During that season, I was not building businesses, speaking on platforms, or leading initiatives. I was navigating uncertainty, carrying the full weight of responsibility as a mother, and doing everything within my ability to survive. It was a humbling and defining period, one that challenged me deeply, yet ultimately became the foundation for everything I am building today. Through Jesus Christ and the support of a compassionate community, Memphis came around my daughter and I helping us begin the journey of rebuilding.

Memphis is not just a city in my story; it is a place that represents rebuilding, resilience, and renewal. While my journey has taken me across different places, Memphis holds a unique significance because it reflects the very spirit I needed during one of the most difficult seasons of my life. There is a strength in Memphis, a perseverance in its people, that mirrors what it takes to start over and rise again.

During that time, life often felt uncertain. I faced moments where the path forward was unclear, and the weight of responsibility felt overwhelming. As a mother, I was not only responsible for myself but for the well-being of my child. There were days filled with questions, moments of fear, and times when I had to make decisions without having all the answers. However, it was within that uncertainty that I began to understand a critical truth: adversity does not mark the end of your story. In many cases, it marks the beginning of your transformation.

My life did not change overnight. There was no single moment where everything suddenly aligned. Instead, change began with a decision. I made a commitment that I would not remain in the same place, even if I did not yet know exactly how to move forward. I chose growth. I began investing in myself, seeking knowledge, developing new skills, and becoming more intentional about my environment. Over time, those small, consistent actions began to create momentum.

Memphis, in many ways, reinforced that momentum. It is a city filled with individuals who understand what it means to rebuild. There is a culture of resilience here, a reminder that even in the face of hardship, progress is possible. Being connected to that environment helped strengthen my mindset. It reminded me that I was not alone in my journey and that rebuilding is something many people walk through before stepping into purpose.

As I continued forward, my journey unfolded in stages. I moved from survival to stability, and from stability into building a life rooted in purpose. I focused first on creating a secure foundation for my family. From there, I began to expand. I launched businesses, developed programs, and created opportunities that would not only support my family but also allow me to serve others. Today, I serve as a wife, a mother of five, an entrepreneur, a transformational speaker, and an author. However, beyond these roles, I am deeply committed to helping others rebuild their lives.

That commitment led to the creation of Hope Within Her Foundation. This foundation was born from my personal experiences and the understanding that many women are navigating similar challenges. Hope Within Her Foundation exists to support women who are in transition, whether they are facing housing instability, emotional hardship, or the process of starting over. The mission is to restore hope, rebuild lives, and provide a pathway to stability and long-term success. Through access to resources, personal development, and life skills, the foundation equips women to move from survival to self-sufficiency.

Memphis continues to represent opportunity, especially for those who are willing to take the next step forward. It is a city filled with individuals who are building, creating, and evolving. For anyone who feels stuck or behind, it is important to understand that life does not always follow a predictable timeline. Challenges, delays, and setbacks do not disqualify you, they prepare you. Everything you have experienced has developed strength, resilience, and perspective.

There is also a misconception that starting over is a sign of failure. In reality, starting over requires courage. It reflects a willingness to grow, to realign, and to move forward with intention. Progress is not built through perfection, but through consistency. Each step forward, no matter how small, contributes to long-term transformation.

My journey from uncertainty to stability and purpose did not happen instantly. It required discipline, persistence, and a commitment to continue moving forward, even during difficult moments. However, one truth remains clear: where you begin does not determine where you will end. Memphis helped shape that understanding for me. It reflects the kind of strength and perseverance that is required to rebuild a life and step into something greater.

Today, my mission extends beyond my personal success. Through my work and through Hope Within Her Foundation, I am committed to helping women move from survival to stability and from stability to success. Wherever you are in your journey, I encourage you to keep moving forward. Progress may be gradual, but it is still meaningful. In time, you will look back and realize that you did not simply endure your circumstances, you rebuilt your life.

Memphis did not just witness my story. In many ways, it helped shape it.
