Free Field Trips Available at the Stax Museum!

If you’re a teacher in Memphis looking for a field trip that’ll have your students dancing and learning, we’ve got the perfect place for you! The Stax Museum of American Soul Music is now offering FREE field trips to Title I schools, with a special focus on Memphis-Shelby County Schools and those in South Memphis neighborhoods near the museum and the Stax Music Academy.

Yes, you read that correctly- it’s completely free!

What is the stax music academy?

If you’ve never been (first of all—go!), the Stax Museum is an epicenter of soul, history, and Memphis pride. Located on the original site of Stax Records, it’s one of the coolest places bringing the story of American soul music to life in a really interactive way.

Students of all ages can explore:

⛪️ A real, 1906 Mississippi Delta Church
💃 The interactive Express Yourself Dance Floor
🎧 A full recreation of the legendary Studio A
📀 The Hall of Records with over 300 albums and 900 singles
🚗 Isaac Hayes’ peacock-blue, fur-lined, gold-trimmed Cadillac Eldorado (yes, it’s as extra as it sounds—and we love it)

Plus over 2,500 items of memorabilia, from stage outfits and instruments to vintage recording gear, personal mementoes, photographs, and more music than you could ever dream. Whether you’re into music, history, or just having a good time, the Stax Musem has it all.

“Keeping the Stax legacy alive means showing young people that greatness started right here—on this very block. That’s why we offer free field trips to Title I schools. We want every student to step into this space and see that the legends who made history here came from the same streets, the same schools, the same city. They were young, creative, and determined, and they changed the world. We want students to know they can, too,” says Bria Saulsberry, Director of Education.
