Foodie Friday: HM Dessert Lounge

The HM Dessert Lounge, now open at 1586 Madison Avenue, is Memphis’ first and only dessert lounge that specializes in savory and sweet food options. Owned and operated by native Memphians Chef Fran and Casscius Mosley along with their sons, HM Dessert Lounge opened in November 2015 with a focus on bringing high quality dessert and meal options to Memphis while supporting local artists and providing an atmosphere for creatives to show off their works.

Chef Fran Mosley has a background in business and catering, and told me she has always wanted to own and operate a dessert lounge and that Memphis is the perfect location for such a business.

The menu offers a range of dessert items from cakes and cupcakes to pies and brownies. The dessert options will switch out seasonally with more fruity items in the Spring. The lunch and dinner menu change daily according to the day of the week:

  • Tuesdays: Super Soups & Salad
  • Wednesdays: Waffle Wednesday
  • Thursdays: Soulful Thursday
  • Friday: Pizza Friday

Soulful Thursdays

I just so happened to come on a Soulful Thursday, and was very happy I did. I enjoyed a dinner of roasted chicken, candied yams, collard greens, mac and cheese, and cornbread dressing. This is comfort food at its finest, with a large portion that will fill you up but also leave room for dessert.

Now let’s talk about the desserts. The portions are large and presented beautifully. I had the caramel apple crisp with ice cream, which is a new item not yet on the menu, and was created by Casscius Mosley with plating done by their son Chris. Fran told me that her and her husband have a spirit of competition to see who can make the next best food item, and their guests get to benefit from that. Meals cost about $10/person and desserts cost about $8/person.

Chef Fran also mentioned that every 45 days they switch out artwork on the walls to showcase local artists in Memphis. Those artists can show and sell their work and HM Dessert Lounge doesn’t require any commission fees. They partner with local musicians as well.

The HM Dessert Lounge offers a Breakfast Buffet every Saturday from 11am-4pm where you can bring your own champagne and they will provide the orange juice for mimosas. This is the only time during the week reservations are required due to such high interest (we know how much Memphians love brunch). HM is also hosting a Love Jones Lounge on 2/13 and a special Surf & Turf dinner for Valentine’s Day. Reservations are required for both events.

HM Dessert has 30 seats and Chef Fran says she loves to host groups of people from bridal parties to birthday parties. Just give her a call to book your next event.

HM Dessert Lounge is open 11am-10pm Tuesday-Saturday and is located at 1586 Madison Ave, across from Minglewood Hall.
