Explore Bike Share, the nonprofit which launched a 60-station, 600-bike bike share system in Memphis this past summer is now offering discounted annual memberships for $60 through January 31.
The $60 annual membership offer coincides with Memphis’ new cycling-friendly developments in 2019, such as The Big Jump project in South Memphis and Explore Bike Share’s system expansion towards the University of Memphis, and will prepare members to take advantage of cycling trails and pathways such as the Memphis River Parks’ River Line, Big River Crossing and Big River Trail, and the Wolf River Greenway on Mud Island in the spring.
“Industry trends are showing that bike share is increasingly used for recreation and exercise, so an annual Explore Bike Share membership will help you focus on health and fitness in addition to point-to-point transportation,” said Trey Moore, Explore Bike Share’s Executive Director. “And with an annual account, your mileage, time and calories burned will be automatically tracked in your membership profile.”
Kevin Woods, Memphis Market President of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee, an Explore Bike Share sustaining sponsor, agrees.
“We appreciate the intersection between exercise and recreation that Explore Bike Share occupies, and their commitment to Memphis’ wellness is why we’re proud to be their sponsor,” he said. “Bike Downtown for lunch, to the Levitt Shell for a free concert, or to the Orange Mound Gallery for art and culture, and you’ll find yourself burning calories while you’re building a better relationship with Memphis.”
In 2018, bike share users collectively took 26,735 bike trips, rode 84,491 miles, and burned an estimated 3.4 million calories. Moore emphasizes that Explore Bike Share’s primary goal is to get more Memphians on bikes, building on the service’s success in 2018. He believes that offering annual memberships at a fraction of the cost will reduce barriers and encourage new riders to join.
“As an annual member for just $60, you’re looking at about 16 cents a day for a full year of unlimited one-hour rides,” he added. “If your new year’s resolutions include going green, getting fit and being active, or saving money, you can get a jump-start on all three with Explore Bike Share.”
