One of the most effective teacher training programs in the state of Tennessee is based right here in Memphis.
Memphis Teacher Residency is a faith-based nonprofit organization that combats educational inequality by building a large number of effective teachers to work in schools in underserved neighborhoods. Per the 2018 TN Teacher Prep Report Card, MTR earned a 4— the highest possible ranking—in training program effectiveness measured by retention, diversity, and student growth.
With a unique model of training that emphasizes the spiritual, social, and instructional needs of teachers, MTR not only gives participants the chance to earn their Master of Education and Tennessee teaching license, but also presents the opportunity for them to grow inside the classroom, in the community they’re serving, and among a like-minded community of educators within a Christian context.

Residents are college graduates invited to train with a mentor, receive coaching, and participate in Master of Urban Education coursework through Union University. In addition, residents receive housing and a living stipend. During the residency year, participants earn their master’s degree and teach for a full academic year in a mentor’s classroom. While some residents do have undergraduate teacher training prior to the residency, others do not and become a certified teacher at the end of the residency year. Graduating the program, residents agree to teach in Memphis high needs schools for three additional years.

Attendees will explore MTR’s mission and strategy, as well as the residency model of teacher training, by hearing from MTR Leadership and current participants. In response to COVID-19, these events will be held as one-hour, webinar-style virtual visits for prospective residency & internship applicants.
