Women of the Arts Closing Reception: “Black Resilience/Black Perspective: I Matter/We Matter”

The Arts Cafe team has been hosting the art exhibition titled Black Resilience/Black Perspective: I Matter/We Matter at The Arts Café, 1823 Kansas St. Memphis, TN from 12-4 PM, every Saturday, from February through Saturday March 23rd. A closing reception will be held on Saturday, March 23rd, focusing on women of the arts and Women’s History Month. The artwork and artists who are a part of this exhibition speaks to what it means to be a part of the Black collective within the American perspective. This exhibition seeks to empower African American artists who are confronting the suppression and the disqualification of black subject matter and black content. In the face of present-day challenges of social and economic inequalities, the whitewashing of the teaching of Black History in the United States’ educational systems, the appropriation of and the vaguing of the lines defining Black culture and Black heritage, we honor, despite these modern-day tests, the daily and historical presence and resilience of black excellence.

Saturday we are focusing on female artists who are a part of the exhibition and a part of the Arts of Memphis including; poetry, play writers, directors, artists, female non profit owners etc. For more information, check out the flyer or their Facebook page. The panel discussion was on February 24 with an outstanding turn out.
