Unraveled
Unraveled explores the ways in which the various textile arts serve(d) as a space of comfort and freedom of creative exploration for Black women. For many Black people their first encounters with relics of our heritage exist in the fibers handed down to us from older cousins, laid on our beds by mothers, and forbidden to touch by grandmothers. As our world continues to evolve and new modes of expression are continually discovered, textile has not yet lost its hand on us.
This show seeks to preserve the comfort and sense of belonging provided by blankets, new hair, fresh clothes, and every other way Black women have found to manipulate fiber in order to transmit energies of warmth, freedom, or even Hot Girl Summer Energy into every manifestation of our handiwork.
Artists included: Joke Amusan, April Bey, Aliyah Bonnette, Jess Hill, Kid Kardiac, Janessa Ladson, Zoë Pulley, and Felicia Wheeler.
