In a traditional workshop, a person observes a black and white painting of a panda, surrounded by art supplies and shelves, capturing the essence of Chinese brush painting.

Traditional Chinese Brush Painting Workshop

This beginner-friendly workshop will guide participants through foundational Chinese brush painting techniques and the creation of a painting of bamboo. Chinese brush painting is a method of exploring mindfulness through art by capturing the essence of one’s subject using minimal brush strokes. Join teaching artist Changzhi Yu, who learned this technique in China and is eager to pass on his cultural heritage through this centuries-old artform.

Chanzhi Yu is a multidisciplinary teaching artist with expertise in watercolor, photography, Chinese brush painting, and calligraphy. From drawing his first picture in childhood to earning a BFA from Suzhou University in China, Mr. Yu is a lifelong creative. He taught for 20 years at Jilin College of Arts in Changchun before relocating to Memphis to earn a MFA from Memphis College of Art. Passionate about using art as a form of cultural education, for the past 20 years he has taught students at the Greater Memphis Chinese School as well as at community groups and several local independent schools. Mr. Yu’s students range from six to over sixty.
