Our City, Our Story

Brian Goldstone, award-winning journalist, anthropologist, and author will be the featured speaker at Our City, Our Story, MIFA’s signature fundraising luncheon, on Tuesday, September 15 at noon at Memphis Hilton.

His book There Is No Place for Us: Working and Homeless in America won the 2026 Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction and was named one of The New York Times’ 10 Best Books of 2025. Through revelatory reporting on five Atlanta families, Goldstone exposes a deeply troubling trend: the dramatic rise of the working homeless in America’s thriving cities. His work delivers an urgent message about skyrocketing rents, low wages, and the displacement happening in communities like ours.

“I believe very strongly that finding a solution to the housing crisis requires an accurate appraisal of the magnitude and severity of what we’re facing, and a proper diagnosis of what brought us here,” Goldstone asserts.

The event is finished.
