Assorted plaster castings with imprints of various objects and textures, displayed on a dark background as part of Morgan Lugo's "Future Fossils" collection.

Morgan Lugo Inspired Future Fossils

Throughout time scientists have used fossils to discover clues about the past. Fossils are usually formed from the hard parts of living things, such as shells or bones. Over millions of years, these organisms turn into fossilized rocks, immortalizing the objects, or moment forever.
What do you think fossils from our age will look like? In this workshop we will make plaster relief sculptures exploring this idea. We will use modern objects and hand tools to create a negative impression of those items and marks of the artist (you!) in clay. We will then cast plaster over the surface of the clay which will capture the details of your composition. Once the plaster hardens you will have a positive casting of your original creation….a “Future Fossil”
