Make Music Day Celebration at Music Box

About Make Music Day (a city-wide Holiday)
in Germantown, TN:

What is Make Music Day in Germantown?June 21, 2024 marks the inaugural year of the annual, city-wide, all-day
long, Make Music Day celebration in Germantown TN, as it was proclaimed
be an official Make Music Day Holiday for the Germantown City.
Make Music Day celebration originally stems from France’s “Fête de la Musique”, and is
now a world-wide celebration, designed to explore the joy of music and music making,
in all its forms. In the U.S., Make Music Day is presented by The NAMM Foundation,
and coordinated by the Make Music Alliance. In Germantown TN, Music Box Inc., a
music school headquartered in Germantown, is now leading the Make Music
Germantown Chapter of Make Music Alliance, and will be activating all the music
making activities on June 21, in the greater Germantown (Memphis) area. YOU, your
family and friends are all invited to participate! We encourage everyone to find their
inner musician! Grab an instrument, make an instrument, find some pots and pans,
form a jam band, or join forces with others to play free public “concerts” wherever you
can, wherever you are! Make Music Germantown is now part of the international music-
making ecosystem, happening in over 1,000 cities across 140 countries, on a same day.
Participating in all the various FREE music making activities across our area is a great
way for all Germantown residents to celebrate the summer solstice, enjoying the longest
day of the year, while sampling a buffet of musical merriment. Open to music makers of
all ages, skill levels, and musical persuasions. The more creative, the better!

How to participate?
There are many ways for the citizens of Germantown to participate: perform, organize a
music making activity, provide a venue for the performances and activities, come enjoy
the music and participate in the actives happening across town, donate to or volunteer
for this cause, spread the word about all the wonderful free and community-focused
events.
Music Box Inc. hopes to make Make Music Day in Germantown, over the next several
years, a very “unique, and anticipated celebration in our City. Every year, on this one
day, the longest day of the year, June 21, we hope to enable an all day celebration,
multiple music making-events, family friendly, free to public – to take place at various
locations, all over the city. Think of it as a series of simple and fun music making
activities, like concerts, jamming sessions, group lessons, etc.
In its inaugural year, June 21 falls on a Friday. We are planning to reach out to our local
arts organizations, performing centers, schools, individual educators, band directors,
libraries, parks, public, private and government organizations, and media – and invite
them to participate.
Some of the music-making activities that we will offer at Music Box on that day, for
example, will be a concert, several family-friendly large group sessions, like bucket
drumming, ukulele circles, harmonica playing, a karaoke party. We will give away
instruments and sheet music on that day. We will tune into the world premier of
symphonic music over zoom, where our local orchestra and modern band musicians can
play music with folks from around the world, live. We will be streaming a songwriting
competition. We are setting up a space for our local musicians to come hang out, get to
know each other, collaborate, in appreciation of their musical gifts that they are sharing
with the world.
On June 21, our city will actually also become part of the global music making echo
system, as the concept has been adopted by us from the Make Music Foundation, who
has been running with this type of celebration on June 21, across 750 cities and over 140
countries, for a couple of decades now. The city of Germantown will become part of the
worldwide map, visible to large music influencers and brands. The prospect of this new
undertaking is very exciting.

Where did the idea come from?
Make Music Germantown is based on France’s “Fête de la Musique,” a national musical
holiday inaugurated in 1982. Ever since, the festival has become an international
phenomenon, celebrated on the same day in more than 750 cities in 120 countries,
including Germany, Italy, Greece, Russia, Lebanon, Ivory Coast, Australia, Peru,
Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Canada, and Japan.
In North America, over three dozen June 21st celebrations now include Make Music
Boston, Make Music Chicago, Make Music Los Angeles, Make Music Madison (WI), and
many others listed on the Make Music Day website.

Who coordinates the celebrations on Make Music Day?
Music Box Inc., a local music school, runs the Germantown Chapter of
MakeMusicDay.org. We need volunteers, sponsors and supporters, to help work
throughout the city to help recruit musicians and venues, manage special projects, and
promote the concerts.
