Listening for a Change: Memphis Matters

Join Playback Memphis for a special performance of Memphis Matters, part of Listening for a Change Week. This performance is presented in partnership with Humanities Tennessee and Kindred Place. Following the performance, there will be a Talk Back that allows time for reflection and dialogue about the power of the arts to strengthen community well being, mental health, and social healing facilitated by Jennifer Balink of Kindred Place. Participants include Virginia Murphy, Playback Memphis Founder and Executive Director, and Chesney Snow, Drama Desk award winning, New York based theater artist, poet, educator, and premiere human beatbox/ vocal percussionist.

The concept of a Playback performance is simple — an audience member shares a reflection, moment, or true story from their lives and then watches that story played back on stage by a team of professional actors, musicians, and dancers. We find this simple act of listening to be life giving. And here’s what audience members are saying.…

“Witnessing these performances is the most powerful self-care I’ve ever experienced. Transformative. You all blow me away. I made a commitment to myself to never miss a performance, if I can help it.”   Misti Rae Holton

Mental Health Matters offers a needed antidote to the fear based, polarizing politics of the day. Performances draw a multi-generational audience, an amazingly, diverse cross-sector of the community.

Don’t have a story to tell? Feel free to participate or simply sit back and watch the magic unfold. Playback unlocks healing, transformation, and joy— one story at a time.

Money should not be a barrier for participation. Tickets are offered on a sliding scale from $10 – $30. Please reach out to Braden Hixson at if you cannot afford the ticketing fee. Ticket sales help support our actors in the professional ensemble.

This project is being supported, in whole or in part, by federal award number SLFRP5534 awarded to the State of Tennessee by the U.S. Department of Treasury.

The event is finished.
