Jaja’s Hair Braiding

Celebrate the beauty of connection and the strength of community through an afternoon of storytelling and sisterhood with A Step Ahead Foundation.

Jaja’s African Hair Braiding is a lively and heartfelt play written by Jocelyn Bioh, presented by Hattiloo Theatre. Inside a busy hair salon, a group of West African immigrant women spend one sweltering summer day creating intricate styles, sharing laughter, and navigating the twists and turns of love and ambition. This powerful story shines a light on the courage it takes to build a life in a place that doesn’t always feel like home.

What to Expect:
  • 1:00pm – 2:00pm: Pre-show brunch-themed reception
  • 2:00pm – 4:00pm: Jaja’s African Hair Braiding (includes a 20-minute intermission)

We are proud to dedicate this special event in memory of Gene Katz, a lifelong advocate for the arts and a beloved supporter of A Step Ahead Foundation. Gene’s passion, generosity, and belief in the transformative power of community continue to inspire us, and we’re honored to celebrate his legacy through this gathering.

Tickets include access to the pre-show reception, seating for the performance, and the opportunity to support A Step Ahead’s mission. Proceeds from this event directly fund educational programming and birth control services that help women take control of their reproductive health and confidently pursue their goals.

The event is finished.
