A clay sculpture of a seated figure in progress on a worktable with notes and photographs in the background, serving as an Introduction to Sculpting.

Introduction to Sculpting from Life

In this class you will learn to build a simple armature for a figure sculpture and work from a life model. On day one we will fabricate the armature with aluminum wire and threaded steel pipe sized for a 24-inch-tall figure. Days 2 through 4 will concentrate on using a life model as a reference for figural sculpture in oil-based clay. While sculpting we will focus on gesture and proportions, while also highlighting some anatomical landmarks. At the end of the 4 sessions, you will be able to take home a sculpted figure sketch (and a little extra clay) for further experimentation.
