Indie Memphis Screening: DRYLONGSO
Indie Memphis presents a screening of Cauleen Smith’s incisive look at racial injustice within a lovingly handmade buddy movie/murder mystery/ romance: DRYLONGSO
ABOUT THE FILM: In 1990s Oakland, art student Pica (Toby Smith) takes polaroids of young Black men, worried at the rate at which they are dying or disappearing. As she searches for a serial killer terrorizing the community, this lovingly handmade film also becomes a murder mystery. After 25 years, Cauleen Smith’s classic 1998 independent film is getting its first wide release in a beautiful new restoration.
Capturing the vibrant community spirit of Oakland in the nineties, Smith crafts both a rare cinematic celebration of Black female creativity and a moving elegy for a generation of lost African American men within this lost treasure of DIY filmmaking.
