Fair Housing Finance: Barriers and opportunities for FHA loan buyers: The post-pandemic housing market has highlighted challenges in using federally backed mortgages, particularly for homebuyers of color attempting to secure FHA loans in competitive markets. Join us for a discussion on equitable housing finance, featuring insights from experts on addressing these disparities and creating fairer opportunities in Memphis’ housing market.

Housing Investors & Wealth: Their impact on communities of color. The rise of large housing investors is disproportionately affecting cities like Memphis, where working- and middle-class communities of color are targeted for home purchases. This session examines the impact on Black wealth-building, explores local efforts to expand homeownership, and discusses potential policies to counter these challenges and promote equity in Memphis.

10:30 am to 11:45 am

National Home Repair Movement: Supporting preservation and safe housing. Much of America’s housing stock is aging and in need of repair, yet current policies favor new construction over preservation. This session delves into the emerging National Home Repair Movement, its progress, challenges, and potential to address unsafe housing and climate impacts. Join the conversation to explore the movement’s goals and how local efforts are bridging the gap in the meantime.

State Policy Advocacy: Lessons from effective housing initiatives. State governments wield significant influence over housing policy, prompting non-profits and advocates to navigate state-level dynamics more strategically. This session examines research from 16 states, highlighting successful housing policy elements and applying those insights to Tennessee’s unique landscape. Discover actionable strategies Memphis housers can adopt to drive policy change locally.
