Celebrate Black Artists – Kehinde Wiley
Celebrate Black Artists! A series of classes introducing children to black artists and art. This series is open to children in grades Kindergarten-2nd grade.
This session is about the life and art of the amazing Kehinde Wiley. A Nigerian American portrait painter known for his highly naturalistic paintings of Black people, frequently referencing the work of Old Master paintings. Students will learn about Kehinde’s life, discover and discuss his art in our mini Kehinde gallery and create their own Kehinde inspired art with Ms. Nyale.
Students will create a portrait or self portrait in Kehinde Wiley’s signature style-The subject in powerful stance making eye contact with the viewer and floral motif in the background. Students will use colored pencils and markers to create the portrait and have the choice of coloring or collaging the floral motif in the background.
