antilectual photography – Armando Salas

In his exhibition antilectual photography, Venezuelan-born & Memphis-based artist Armando Salas displays 20 years of analog experimentation, crafting dynamic compositions that pay homage to art history & photography. Salas describes his antilectual photography practice as

“Both a play on words and an artistic stance, born from my personal experience with dyslexia and memory difficulties.

I have always struggled to remember names, movements, and references that are often considered the “language” of the art world.

This inability to categorize or intellectually articulate my influences eventually became the very foundation of my creative process.

It is not about rejecting intellectuality, but about breaking the academy’s limitations on how education should be understood.”
