Anderson Goin: “Home” – Solo Show Opening

October 12 | 6PM-9PM

The Ugly Art Co.

Description: Anderson Goin’s solo exhibition, Home, invites viewers into a deeply personal exploration of memory, nostalgia, and the subtle moments that define our sense of belonging. Using oil pastels, acrylic paint, and markers, Goin instinctively weaves together scenes from his childhood—car rides with his sister, the comforting glow of a bedside lamp, or the worn rotary phone where young nerves met first love. His playful, spontaneous mark-making captures the joy and comfort found in the often-overlooked moments that shaped his early years. Home is both a celebration and a quiet meditation on love, loss, and the fragility of the memories that make us who we are. Join us for an evening of reflection and discovery as we delve into the emotions and connections that bind us to the places we call home.

Artist Statement: I explore the ordinary moments that shaped my childhood and still anchor my sense of comfort and belonging. Growing up I often overlooked the beauty in everyday moments—like car rides with my sister, watching Popeye while my grandmother played solitaire on her cherished embroidered placemats, or hiding under my mother’s long dress at Christmas parties trying to escape being pinched and prodded. Now, through this work, I aim to recontextualize these small, disregarded memories that brought me joy, comfort, and a sense of home. I work with oil pastels, acrylic paint, and markers in an instinctive, spontaneous way, revisiting the playful, uninhibited mark-making of childhood while integrating the compositional and color techniques I’ve gained through formal settings. The familiar presence of the lamp next to my bed that kept the “shadow man” away, our old rotary phone where I’d nervously call my crush’s house and ask her father if she was home, the scent of my mother’s perfume after they returned from a long trip, the chair where my father sat nightly; these seemingly mundane objects were my steadfast companions. The symbols often repeated through this work represent more than mere items to me; they embody deep-seated emotions and memories. While this work is rooted in a personal understanding of “home” and everyday interactions, it also reflects an underlying anxiety about losing these cherished Connections. I focus on what I intimately understand—love and joy and perhaps the fragility of both. For now, this is what I aim to convey through my art: a celebration of the simple, enduring moments that resonate with universal truths of contentment, belonging, and the desire to remember.

The event is finished.
