An Elegy to America in Black and White by acclaimed artist Madai Taylor

Join us for the Memphis debut of An Elegy to America in Black and White by acclaimed artist Madai Taylor, proudly sponsored by the Downtown Memphis Commission — an exhibition that confronts the beauty, pain and prophecy of the Black American experience through the language of earth and pigment.

Madai’s work has traveled the country for its raw honesty, exploring race, faith and the unfolding story of America. As the nation wrestles with debates over Project 2025, widening social division and the attempt to silence Black history, this exhibition arrives at a time that feels almost prophetic.

Each piece is a testament to resilience, a reminder that while some may try to remove Black history from classrooms, they cannot erase it from our spirit or from the art world.

Experience the power, reflection and truth of An Elegy to America in Black and White inside the historic Withers Collection Museum & Gallery, a sacred space dedicated to preserving the legacy of civil rights through imagery and art.

The event is finished.
