8th Annual Walkin in Memphis Celebration for World Down Syndrome Day
Walkin’ in Memphis, an awareness walk for Down syndrome celebrating WORLD DOWN SYNDROME DAY, will kick off its eighth annual fundraiser event at 5am on March 21st to raise $21,000 while Josh Greer walks 21 miles across Memphis. The walk starts at the Memphis/Arkansas Bridge and will end at the Renasant Convention Center located in downtown Memphis, with a finale celebration. The celebration is open to the public and is a free event. Attendees will be able to purchase food & drink items, participate in games for kids and other activities, as well as a silent auction, while viewing the lighting of the Memphis (Hernando/Desoto) Bridge and the Bass Pro Pyramid into the blue and yellow colors representing Down syndrome. The party will be at Renasant Convention Center, 255 N Main St, Memphis, TN 38103, starting at 6pm. Free underground parking is available for attendees. The walk, inspired by Josh for his daughter, Marley, with Down syndrome, was created to bring acceptance and awareness to the community about the genetic disorder and the incredible abilities and worth of every person with Down syndrome. Each year on March 21st, designated as World Down Syndrome Day, Josh walks for 12-14 hours across the Memphis area, trekking at least 21 miles & formally stopping at 21 well-known Memphis attractions to take a snapshot with supporters, self-advocates, sponsors, news outlets, local politicians/celebrities/athletes & many others. At each stop, Josh raises the global symbol for Down syndrome, a blue & yellow butterfly, in support of Down syndrome awareness & inclusion! The goal each year is to raise $21,000 with 100% of proceeds going to the Down Syndrome Association of Memphis & the Mid-south (DSAM) so they can continue to enrich and expand programs for individuals and families in the Memphis and Mid-south areas.
