The Downtown Memphis Commission is awarding a new grant to empower creative minds who have vibrant ideas for new projects.
Applications are now being accepted for the Downtown Events, Animation and Activation Grants, which will be awarded to new creative projects, events, or other opportunities that will help create an engaging Downtown experience.
The projects will aid in bringing together diverse communities, and help create a captivating shared space that can inspire all who spend time Downtown.
“Our public spaces, especially in Downtown, should be a canvas and platform for our creatives so that when people visit or spend time in Downtown, they understand our culture and who we are by the events and built environment surrounding them,” said Leslie Gower, DMC vice president, marketing and communications.
Gower said projects such as recreational meetups, public and performance art, social engagement and professional collaborative events are all eligible to apply for funding. To qualify, the project must take place between July 1, 2016 and June 30, 2017.
The DMC is accepting applications for the grant on a first come, first served basis. A committee will review the applicants, and award up to $5,000 if the project meets the evaluation criteria.
“The best projects, events, and ideas originate from people with passion and without restriction on idea creation,” Gower said. “Those types of projects – the ones that developed with vision and intention – can inspire and uplift others, and change the way people think of their community.”
