When DJ Zirk talks about Memphis hip hop, he’s reliving history. From his roots in Orange Mound to being honored by The Hip Hop Museum in New York, the legendary producer and artist continues to represent Memphis’s creative grit, innovation, and authenticity.
Now, Zirk is bringing that same energy home for the Memphis Rap OGz concert on Halloween night at Minglewood Hall, where he’ll perform alongside fellow pioneers Crunchy Black, La Chat, DJ Spanish Fly, Gangsta Pat, and more. It’s a reunion of the architects who built the sound that shaped Southern hip-hop forever.
From Orange Mound to Worldwide Recognition 🌍
Zirk’s roots in Orange Mound run deep, and he says the pain and passion of his neighborhood shaped every beat he ever made.
“Orange Mound helped us create the beats we made. There’s a lot of anger, a lot of pain in Orange Mound. Seeing friends grow up and get killed — all that went into my music.”
That raw honesty, the ability to turn struggle into sound, became the heart of Memphis hip hop.
“We felt like we weren’t gonna make it past 21,” Zirk reflected. “So I put all that into my music.”
“2 Thick”: The Birth of a Movement
Before rap collectives became mainstream, Zirk helped pioneer the idea of community-driven hip hop. He and his crew often packed the stage with 30 to 40 people, creating a sense of unity and power that defined early Memphis shows.
“I used to let people in the club free,” he laughed. “The club owners hated it. But then we’d get on stage, look around, and it’d be like 30 or 40 people up there. They looked at me and said, ‘We ought to call it 2 Thick.’”
That inclusive, high-energy vibe helped turn local shows into social events — a celebration of Memphis by Memphis.
“Memphis Has Legends Walking Among Them”
Even with national acclaim, Zirk remains focused on one mission: making sure Memphis gives itself the credit it deserves.
“We got people right here in this city that’s big,” he said. “I don’t think people really understand how big Tommy Wright is, how big Chat is. We got legends walking right amongst us.”
That’s why this Halloween’s Memphis Rap OGz concert is so special. It’s a night for the city to celebrate its own icons.
“Y’all Be Prepared. I Might Come Flying Out the Ceiling”
When asked what fans can expect from his Minglewood Hall performance, Zirk just laughed:
“Oh, man, I’m gonna rock this show. I might come flying out the ceiling!”
Sharing the stage with longtime friends like Crunchy Black, La Chat, and DJ Spanish Fly, Zirk says the energy will be unmatched.
“It just feels great being on stage with pioneers and legends. I love it.”
He hopes the show inspires the next generation to dream big and stay original.
“Be the trend. Don’t wait for someone else to tell you what Memphis is. We already know.”
