Hey there, Memphis adventurers! If you’re looking for a fun and scenic spot to explore, look no further than Big River Crossing. It’s not just the longest pedestrian and cycling bridge across the mighty Mississippi, but it’s also your ticket to incredible adventures, breathtaking views, and a journey through time on the Arkansas floodplain.
What’s So Special About Big River Crossing?
Big River Crossing sits on the historic Harahan Bridge, connecting Tennessee to Arkansas, and Main Street in Memphis to Main Street in West Memphis. This 10-mile corridor is packed with awesome destinations, including the sprawling 1,500-acre Ducks Unlimited Park and the epic over 110-mile Big River Trail System. Whether you’re in the mood for a chill walk, a tough bike ride, or some peaceful birdwatching, this bridge is your gateway to it all. Over 300,000 visitors a year can’t be wrong—come see why Big River Crossing is racking up awards and rave reviews on TripAdvisor.
Light Up Your Night with Mighty Lights
Crossing Big River is always an adventure, thanks to the ever-changing scenery. But if you really want to see something special, visit after dark for the Mighty Lights show. This nightly LED extravaganza lights up the bridge and syncs with other installations on the Hernando DeSoto Bridge and in Tom Lee Park. With over 100,000 lights, it’s the biggest light show on the Mississippi River, running every hour and half-hour after sundown until the 10:30 PM grand finale.
What’s on the Other Side?
Once you’ve crossed into Arkansas, you’ll find yourself at Ducks Unlimited Park. This park, run by the world’s largest wetlands and waterfowl conservation organization (headquartered right here in Memphis!), is working hard to restore the natural habitat. Earlier this year, the park received $16.1 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation to help with these efforts.
Must-See Spots in Ducks Unlimited Park
Ducks Unlimited Park boasts a seven-mile paved trail loop and a half-mile out-and-back trail, connecting to the Big River Levee Trail System. Along the trails, you’ll discover five lookout points offering stunning views of the river, the Memphis skyline, and Arkansas farmland. You might even spot barges carrying everything from cotton to NASA spacecraft. And don’t miss the seasonal sunflower field or the prime birdwatching opportunities—the Mississippi Flyway is a hotspot for 325 species of migratory birds.
More Adventures Await
Big River Crossing and Ducks Unlimited Park are also your entry points to the over 110-mile Big River Trail System, which stretches from Marion, Arkansas, to Memphis, Tennessee, and beyond. Future plans for Ducks Unlimited Park include new trails, a welcome pavilion, restrooms, water stations, and an off-leash dog park.
