Memphis Teacher Residency (MTR) is a faith-based nonprofit organization that offers an unmatched opportunity for those who aspire to make quality education available to all Memphis students regardless of their zip code. MTR’s mission is Christian love expressed in equal education, and it is realized in 34 under-served partner schools located in five Memphis neighborhoods where the education gap is greatest.
MTR has recruited and trained 650 aspiring teachers since 2009 and continues to support 334 teachers and leaders who continue to work in Memphis schools today.
In addition to the teacher preparation program, MTR also offers two summer camps and the Memphis Literacy Institute whose mission is that every school in Memphis would implement research-based literacy best practices and be equipped for literacy success such that every student in Memphis would experience the dignity and equity of reading on grade level.

MTR is a community where strong relationships are built and professional connections are developed. Residents and interns find unity within the diversity of people who come from all over the country and have the same goal and mindset.
Memphis Teacher Residency provides housing at the Parcels at Crosstown Concourse.
At the parcels, almost EVERYTHING you need is a floor away.
The ten-story building is home to a wide variety of inhabitants –food vendors, local retail, medical & business offices, local nonprofits, a YMCA, and even a charter high school. You name it, Crosstown’s (probably) got it.
This summer academic camp serves elementary students in MTR partner neighborhoods and was created to address systemic summer academic losses. The camp makes learning fun for students by combining math, reading, extracurriculars, field trips, and more.
MTR hires approximately 22 college interns for 4 weeks to run this educational academic camp. Interns receive a living stipend, housing, meals, community, experience, and the opportunity to make a difference for Memphis youth.
MTR seeks underclassmen college students of color with an interest in STEM education to teach in Memphis for a 3 week summer camp.
During camp, rising 7th graders join college students to discover STEM fields and to significantly grow their understanding in Mathematics (the foundation of a STEM career). The camp strives to launch students on a path where they can have access and success in a STEM career.
MTR desires to see Memphis’ most marginalized communities have access to the same quality of education within their neighborhood-zoned schools as any other child in Memphis. Find out how they do this via the theory of change here.
