CmaJor’s Soundtrack of the City: A Gritty Love Letter to Memphis

To meet CmaJor is to meet someone mellow, grounded, and chill.

To hear CmaJor’s music is to step into another world, one that’s raw, aggressive, textured, and alive with sonic memories from childhood games like Grand Theft Auto.

“I think the funny thing about my art is it's the reverse of me,” he says. “I'm chill and laid back, but my art? It’s abrasive. It’s gritty. It’s full of all the video games and childhood memories I carry with me.”

As UNAPOLOGETIC. prepares to celebrate its 10-year anniversary with a free mini-festival on August 16 at The Ravine, CmaJor is stepping into the spotlight.

🎮 A Creative Built on Curiosity

CmaJor’s journey with UNAPOLOGETIC. started with one thing: the need to learn.

“When I stepped into Dirty Socks studio, I just knew I was gonna get all the knowledge I needed,” he says. “What I didn’t know was how much I’d learn beyond the music.”

That internship not only sharpened his production skills but it also shaped the way he lives, works, and leads.

“Most of the decisions I make now trace back to those days. I think, ‘Okay, what did I learn then? How does it apply now?’ That foundation taught me how to be efficient, how to be an asset, and how to enjoy the moment even as we grow.”

🏙️ Sticking with the 901

“I joined before it had a name. It was just me and MADBEATS,” he says. “And it gave me permission to be an artist.”

Like many Memphis creatives, CmaJor faced the question: stay in the city or chase music dreams in Atlanta or Houston?

He stayed. Partly out of fear, partly out of love.

“I was scared, bruh,” he admits. “I didn’t want to leave. I’ve always loved Memphis. I was comfortable here, and going to college locally just stamped it.”

That decision turned out to be fate. It kept him rooted in the rhythms of his city and in arm’s reach of the musical giants who shaped him.

“Pat, Three 6... they’re embedded in me,” he says. “That flavor, that rhythm, it’s in my DNA. I don’t even have to try. It just comes out.”

🎤 From Lights to Legacy: Brinner & Beyond

Ask CmaJor about his favorite UNAPOLOGETIC. moment, and he doesn’t hesitate. It’s Brinner.

The breakfast-for-dinner-themed show, dreamed up by AWFM (A Weirdo From Memphis), was CmaJor’s first deep dive into event production. It also happened to unlock an entirely new creative lane.

“That show was crazy. I ran lights for the first time, learned everything on the spot and now that’s a whole skillset I still use,” he explains.

But more than the tech, it was the transformation of space and spirit that left a mark.

“We took this building and made it something else. Watching a team come together to bring one vision to life? That changed me. That showed me what UNAPOLOGETIC. really is.”

🎧 The Next 10: Music First

As the collective enters its second decade, CmaJor’s excitement is laser-focused:

“Man, I’m excited to get back to the music.”

While UNAPOLOGETIC. is known for events, brand activations, art shows, and culture-shifting moments, its heartbeat has always been the music.

“We’re all so talented, we can hop in any bag—lighting, design, production—but the talk right now is about the music. We’re about to level up in ways we haven’t before.”

💯 What the 901 Means

CmaJor’s story mirrors that of many creatives in Memphis rooted in a deep love for the city, shaped by its sounds, and strengthened by its challenges.

“I grew up here. And now I get to do the work I love in the city I love,” he says. “That means everything.”
