WHY R4R’S WALK OR RUN MATTERS FOR MEMPHIS
It’s amazing how similar a city is to a person. Every city has strengths and weaknesses. Every city has personality. Every city will struggle if neglected. And like all people, the more love and investment a city gets, the more it flourishes.
The 901 is our city. In recent years, we have enjoyed celebrating Memphis on September 1st. 901 Day is a great day to throw a party and show her some love. There is so much to celebrate as we think about the mosaic of people, talents, and gifts that live in the Blue City. From good music to good cooking, the mighty Mississippi, basketball, and the grit and grind that is our Grizzlies and our people. Memphis is not perfect, but she is beautiful.
The word Memphis means “enduring beauty.” As Memphians, you and I have the opportunity to help Memphis move past seasons of enduring into an era of beauty. Whether you were born and raised here or came here for a season of your life, you and I are Memphis.
If Memphis has a problem, it’s our privilege and responsibility to be a part of the solution.
This past January, Mother Nature dumped over six inches of snow and a -1º windchill on the day R4R planned to host its third-annual Unite Memphis 5k and 1-mile walk or run. Now, we’re scheduled to race on Monday, September 2nd in the heart of our great city.
While it was disappointing to reschedule, this new date will allow our city to make the news that we long to hear. News of progress, news of hope, news of a better tomorrow.
If you come out as one of 2,500 Memphians to walk, run, and enjoy a fun-filled Unite Memphis event this Labor Day on Monday, September 2nd—we’re calling it 902 Day—you will play a key role in helping Memphis host the largest walk or run for the cause of unity in the country.
On September 1st, I can’t wait to celebrate Memphis on 901 Day. But we can’t stop there. There’s work to be done in our incredible home. Come out on 902 Day and help Unite Memphis. Not only will you be inspired to see how many Memphians come together to create a picture of what our city could be, should be, and must be, but your registration dollars will also go to help support four Memphis education nonprofits that are in the trenches daily helping close the education gap in our city.
On 901 Day, let’s love our great city.
On 902 Day, let’s paint a picture of unity that continues to fuel the flame of Memphis and bring our city into an era of beauty.
