Cameron Bethany: From Memphis Church Choirs to Unapologetic Stages

When Cameron Bethany describes his music as spiritual and enchanting, he means it. His voice carries the warmth of Memphis church pews, the grit of a city that makes you earn every note, and the shimmer of an artist determined to create something that feels like him and no one else.

Raised in the Bible Belt, Cameron’s earliest lessons in music came from the choir loft.

“Memphis church was the first introduction I got to music,” he says.

Both of his parents were in music groups before he was born, so it was only natural that he would follow in their footsteps — first alongside his two sisters, and eventually as an artist with a voice and vision all his own.

🤝 A Different Kind of Partnership

By 2015, Cameron was tired of the “cookie-cutter” sound dominating the local scene. He wanted to blend gospel and soul roots with a futuristic, almost otherworldly approach. He remembered a past connection with I Make Mad Beats and reached out.

That first meeting at Dirty Socks Studio MAD wanted to know who Cameron thought he was as an artist. The answer sparked a collaboration that birthed the song Interest and a bartering system: Cameron provided vocals and samples for Mad’s projects in exchange for studio time to build his own.

Before long, he was invited to join UNAPOLOGETIC., a place where individuality was the root.

“At the time, I was not UNAPOLOGETIC.,” he says. “MAD made space for me to discover what that looked like.”

Cameron didn’t set out to start his career here. It was simply home, the first place that accepted him for who he was artistically.

Memphis taught him resilience early. Growing up in churches with limited equipment meant learning to sing a cappella, belt without a mic, and harmonize on the fly. Programs like Echoes of Truth and summer camps through Memphis City Schools provided professional-level training, long rehearsals, and big-stage productions.

“The lack of resources meant I never got comfortable,” he says. “Memphis taught me that it’s up to me to make it happen and to use what I have to the best of my ability.”

🔥 A Night to Remember

When asked what his favorite UNAPOLOGETIC. memory is, Cameron said The You Make Me Nervous release show.

He wanted perfection: flawless sound, a packed room, and a night people would talk about for weeks. But the power went out…not one…not two…but three times.

The third time, mid-song, he didn’t stop. He sang harder. The crowd moved closer. Without lights or mics, it became something raw and electric.

“That moment reminded me that when you strip away everything you think you need, the thing you need most is still there with you.”

His UNAPOLOGETIC. family stood by him, making sure the night finished strong.

“It really showed me that this is a family… we all know how to pivot and be there for each other.”

Cameron insists the world hasn’t even seen a glimmer of what he can do. After years of uphill battles, both personal and collective, he feels the team is finally settling back into who they are.

The next chapter will be bigger: new music, tours, fashion, merch, and art born from hard-earned lessons. “I feel like the art that’s coming from the challenges we’ve faced is going to inspire our city and inspire a nation.”

Expect to see and hear a Cameron Bethany who’s louder, bolder, and more certain than ever. And if you catch him on stage when the lights go out, don’t worry. He’ll still find a way to light up the room.
