How It Happened
This comes months after speculation started in August when Soc Takes reported that Memphis would be among the next cities to join USL, the second tier of pro soccer in the United States. That report in the “Very likely” category to get a team saying, “Multiple sources have informed Soc Takes that the Memphis Redbirds group are involved in the ownership structure… USL values the Memphis market due to its ideal geographical location – within driving distance to other markets which will be in its (eventual) central conference.”
Then, the USL Commissioner himself confirmed the rumor in November. quoted in Memphis Business Journal saying, “The fans of this sport in Memphis are going to be very excited… They are going to be watching some world-class players coming into Memphis. We’ve got some phenomenal players playing in the USL. It is a really high-level of professional soccer.” The MBJ even looked into how a soccer pitch might look at Autozone Park.
