Burke’s Books’ Bike and Open House 10/18

Burke's Book Store Bike

Celebrate Burke’s Book Store’s 140th anniversary on Sunday, October 18th from 1-4pm! There will be cake and champagne and lots of items to give away, plus their new Burke’s t-shirts will be available at a special price. Their new delivery bike will not be there yet, but they want to be able to personally thank everyone who contributed to the project.

Burke’s Book Store began shortly after the Civil War as a family business in 1875, and stayed in the family for 3 generations. In 1960s, the store moved to Poplar from its original Main Street building. Since then it has been moved twice, and is now owned by Corey and Cheryl Mesler, who met each other in the store and bought it after working there for over a decade.

The store now offers one of the best used books selections in Memphis and has been Memphis Flyer’s Best Used Book Store, 10 years running. The store has even expanded to online book selling to capture a wider audience. Burke’s continues to operate in the middle of the thriving Cooper Young as one of the oldest independent book stores.

Burke’s offers a wide selection of used and rare books. You can even find first editions and signed copies in store. With approximately 14,000 books listed and books being added daily you can find almost any book you’re looking for. In addition to the used selection, Burke’s also has new books from Memphis writers, southern literature, and popular fiction and nonfiction. And soon, Burke’s delivery bike will be operational too.
