Building Brighter Futures: The Foster Grandparent Program in Memphis

For sixty years, the AmeriCorps Seniors Foster Grandparent Program has been a beacon of hope, bridging generations and transforming lives across the nation. Here in Memphis, the program has been sponsored locally by Porter-Leath since 1985 and continues to shine by connecting older adults with young children in classrooms and early learning centers.

What Is the Foster Grandparent Program?

Launched in 1965, the Foster Grandparent Program empowers adults aged 55 and older to share their time, skills, and life experience with children. Volunteers serve as mentors, tutors, and consistent role models, helping children build confidence, improve academic skills, and feel supported in their growth.

These “grandparents” aren’t just visitors in a classroom—they are trusted guides who provide the steady encouragement so many children need to thrive. Their presence demonstrates to young learners that someone believes in them and is invested in their future.

Why It Matters in Memphis

In the Mid-South, the program has been active since 1972, with Porter-Leath proudly serving as the sole sponsor for the past four decades. Today, 132 Foster Grandparents contribute their time and talents at 24 preschool and elementary sites across Shelby, Fayette, and DeSoto counties. In the past year alone, these dedicated volunteers gave more than 95,000 hours of service, a remarkable testament to their commitment and impact.

Their work touches countless young lives, especially children in early learning programs who benefit from the extra support. Whether it’s sitting beside a child learning to read, celebrating small victories in the classroom, or simply offering a listening ear, Foster Grandparents help children succeed academically and emotionally.

A Legacy of Connection

The magic of this program lies in its intergenerational bond. Children gain confidence and skills, while older adults find purpose, connection, and joy in giving back. It’s a two-way exchange of love, wisdom, and resilience that strengthens our entire community.

As Judy Rautine, Porter-Leath’s Generations Manager, explains: “Our Foster Grandparents have helped generations of children build confidence and achieve success. Their service is a living legacy, and their continued dedication helps ensure a stronger future for our entire community.”

Join the Movement

Nationwide, more than 11,000 Foster Grandparents serve in over 2,000 locations, proving the extraordinary impact of volunteers who step into this role. Memphis is proud to be part of this legacy.

If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a Foster Grandparent, Porter-Leath is always welcoming new volunteers. By dedicating just a few hours a week, you can change the life of a child and perhaps rediscover new meaning in your own.
