This Friday, the Shelby County Early Literacy Plan officially launches. It’s a first-of-its-kind, county-wide roadmap designed to ensure every child becomes a confident, capable reader. And for thousands of Memphis kids, this has the power to change everything.
Reading on grade level by 3rd grade is one of the strongest predictors of lifelong success. Kids who meet that milestone are more likely to graduate, pursue higher education, and live healthier lives.
And now, Memphis has a unified strategy to help every child thrive.
💡 What Is the Shelby County Early Literacy Plan?
Developed by the Early Literacy Consortium, convened by Stand for Children Tennessee, First 8 Memphis, and Literacy Mid-South, this plan represents years of collaboration across schools, nonprofits, families, libraries, and community organizations. It’s a shared vision for the future of every child in Shelby County.
The Early Literacy Plan will:
🏡 1. Bring Families, Schools, and Neighborhoods Together
One goal. One roadmap. One community working to ensure kids can read confidently and joyfully.
🍎 2. Strengthen Support for Families & Educators
Parents, caregivers, and teachers will have access to more tools, training, and resources to help young readers succeed.
📚 3. Expand Literacy-Rich Environments
From libraries and after-school programs to faith communities and neighborhood spaces, this plan ensures books, language, and storytelling show up everywhere kids learn.
This is what real, systemic change looks like: everyone rowing in the same direction for our youngest learners.
