Beale Street Gives Back, a new initiative by the Downtown Memphis Commission, Beale Street Merchants Association, and Beale Street Management, launched this week to donate funds to several local charities.
Over the summer, Beale Street Bucks was implemented to solve crowd issues on Beale Street Saturday nights. A $10 cover charge was collected from each patron, and in return everyone was given a $7 voucher to be used at any Beale Street business. Beale Street Gives Back is made possible by using the funds from the unused vouchers.
Every Thursday throughout the month of December, new charities will be announced as recipients of program funds. Nearly $55,000 will be distributed to various local organizations. So far, Porter-Leath and the Blues Foundations’ Handy Artist Relief Trust Fund have been selected. Porter-Leath is a resource for at-risk children and families, and The HART Fund covers health care costs for aging blues musicians without health insurance.
Stay tuned for more information on new Beale Street Gives Back recipients throughout the month.
