The show begins with esteemed choreographer and “father” of American ballet, Balanchine’s, “Square Dance,” a piece Ballet Memphis has been perfecting for weeks after Balanchine agreed to use of his art. This technically challenging dance pushes the dancers to new heights of self discovery and inspiration. In “Fingers of Your Thoughts” by Julia Adam, dancers employ the use of spoken word as well as their hands during the dance as a metaphor for life that is sensitive, imaginative, and deeply profound. Lastly, we see the reappearance of Trey McIntyre’s “The Reassuring Effects (of Form and Poetry),” an energizing, joy-filled dance which Ballet Memphis last performed 10 years ago.
