When we moved to Memphis, everyone kept telling me that it’s a big city that feels like a small town.

As a newbie, I had no idea what that meant and thought to myself that there is no way this could be true of such a huge place. Well, I can tell you that after being here for almost three months, that statement could not be truer.

We ran into a local church pastor and his wife at YOLO a few days after we moved here. They told us, “Everyone in the city already knows and loves you because you are with MTR.” I didn’t realize how right they were. I couldn’t believe that people already knew who I was even though I just moved here.

When you move to a big city, or any new city for that matter, it can be easy to feel like a nobody. Nobody knows you yet and you are starting this new journey where you have to make a lot of new relationships. There are times that can feel lonely. I held on to that truth that “everybody already knew and loved me” because I needed it when I felt like a nobody. And I have been amazed to see that truth come to light in my own life.

I am thankful to be a part of an organization that is so highly esteemed in the community. I am also thankful to have that connection and it has helped me to meet so many wonderful people. I am not alone, in fact, I am known and valued and that is huge for someone who is so new to such a big place.

I have been incredibly impressed with the collaboration that is happening here. Memphis celebrates and cares about what people are doing. It is refreshing to see a city that cares for education. It’s nice to see churches that are diverse and full of life. When people want to do something in Memphis, the city will get behind it and the city will show you love. I can already sense that there is something really special about this place and I am pumped to be here.

I can honestly say that being a newcomer to Memphis has been a lot of fun for me. The “big city” has such a sweet southern warmth to it (literally and figuratively speaking). There is A LOT to do here and there’s always something fun happening. The city has a lot to offer for all types of people and I’m looking forward to experiencing all that Memphis has to offer.
