Memphis artist Kia Shine is making waves—this time, outside the studio. In 2025, he’s launching Aqua-Tism, a free water safety program designed to protect children with autism from the dangers of accidental drowning.
Inspired by his son’s diagnosis of severe autism, Shine saw a clear need:
“Our autism babies and young adults are dying from drowning… They are 160 times more likely to drown than a typical child,” he told FOX13.
Now, he’s taking action, partnering with the City of Memphis and Parks & Rec to ensure more children with autism learn essential water safety skills in a space that’s therapeutic, supportive, and safe.

Why Aqua-Tism Matters
Water can be calming for neurodivergent children, but it can also pose serious risks. Through lessons, outreach, and hands-on support, Shine’s mission is to save lives through education and access.
“Even if I have to pick them up myself, we’re getting them in the water,” he said.
