A Step Ahead Foundation is a Memphis organization that strives to provide Memphians with free, long-lasting contraceptives. By doing so they hope to encourage career opportunities before childbirth, and inform Memphians of the importance of family planning.

Their scholarship not only represents their ideals, but provides young women with the opportunity to flourish in their careers. Specifically, this year the A Step Ahead, along with Girls Inc. of Memphis and BankTennessee, plans to provide $200,000 in scholarships to girls pursuing studies beyond high school.

Interested Memphians can apply by visiting A Step Ahead’s scholarship information page. This page contains information about eligibility and the application process.

“The Step Ahead Scholarship gave me an opportunity to focus on being a physicist,” Phoebe said, “I’m hoping to break the stereotypes about women in science and inspire young girls to know they can be anything.”

According to Girls Inc. president and CEO Lisa Moore, the scholarship ultimately encourages the educational advancement and leadership development of young women in the Memphis area.

Both Moore’s organization and A Step Ahead want to make Memphis a better place for young, driven women in the Memphis area, and the scholarship is doing exactly that.

From the $200,000 fund, numerous scholarships of at least $2,000 will be awarded based on both the strength of application and financial need. According to A Step Ahead, each award is a one-time, annual scholarship—but recipients are encouraged to maintain good academic status and reapply each year as needed.

Ultimately, applicants looking to use their education to help the community will be given preference. Further, applicants who exemplify the ideals of A Step Ahead will also be preferred.
