All You Gotta Do is Pick Up The Phone

There’s a lot of advice floating around out there, especially when it comes to career advice. We know firsthand that it is often overwhelming and confusing and seemingly irrelevant at times. At Choose901, we’re all about making sure your humanity is valued in your workplace and in every facet of your life. We believe the more you are valued for you at your job, in your class, and in your community, the better it is for every party as our humanness is elevated.

That being said, I want to give you a simple rule and statement and guideline that I believe is one of the most important aspects of building your career: pick up the phone. That’s it. That’s the post. But for real, by that I mean pick up every phone call, answer every email, reply to every text and respond to every handwritten letter. It seems rudimentary, and in some ways it is, but you wouldn’t believe the opportunities and blessings we see people missing out on weekly simply because they don’t answer the phone or respond to a text. Relationships are the foundation of everything, and you want to be known as someone who’s willing to foster and develop a relationship.

When people think of you, will they see you as someone who’s reliable, dependable and willing to answer the phone? Or do they hesitate to reach out with an opportunity because of a lack of trust, not in your work ethic or talent, but your consistency?

So what should you do?

  1. Do a check of how often someone reaches out to you, especially in a professional or work situation, and how often you respond to them.
  2. Pick up the phone. Reply to every text. Answer every email that comes from a valuable connection.
  3. Watch how your network, and therefore your net worth, slowly starts to grow and develop.
