It’s the best time of the year people. The days are getting shorter, the temperature continues to go lower, and Christmas trees are going up!
Honestly, I think that the excitement leading up to the Christmas holiday is debatably better than the actual day itself. My girlfriend is a huge fan of Christmas. I mean a huge fan. She started playing Christmas music once Halloween was over and done with if that gives any indication. Regardless, the excitement is infectious, and I was soon sharing her excitement. What better way to get in the spirit than go to the Memphis Zoo to see the ridiculous amount of christmas lights scattered all around with Christmas music playing everywhere in the background.
When you drive up to the zoo you’re greeted by a giant Christmas tree surrounded by the animal statues lit up in red and green. After seeing that, I didn’t think it could get any more Christmasy, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. Of course to get in, you have to pay the fee, but for a mere $9 a person, they’re not asking for much. I can guarantee you’ll get your money’s worth! They’ll hand you a map laying out where all of the main attractions are so you can better plan your walk through the zoo. They really do use the entire space of the zoo, so some planning couldn’t hurt so that you can make sure you don’t miss a thing.
A lot of the attractions are just frames with Christmas lights on them to paint a picture or scene. Some of them are blinking in coordination to make it seem like it’s moving. The frames range from singing reindeer to good ole Saint Nick being stuck in a chimney. I’m a sucker for bright lights (and I mean who really isn’t?), so it’s a lot of fun just walking around and appreciating the views. Along with all of the lights, they also have an ice skating rink! For $6 you can grab a pair of ice skates to get on the ice and pray that you don’t fall like I did. It’s a whole lot of fun, but you just have to be careful and not eat it quite as hard as I did.
Sam and I had a great time at the zoo. Although it wasn’t the typical visit, we really enjoyed our night there. It’s a great place for anyone of any age to enjoy, so grab the family or your significant other and take them to really get into the spirit before the holidays are over.
