This five-day art camp for kids ages 8 to 11 at ShapeShifter Art School is taught by art educator Lurlynn Franklin. The immersive experiences gives young artists opportunities to reflect on who they are and to express that visually through different art genres and with the use of a variety of art mediums. All supplies are included (BYO snacks!) for this week-long experience, scheduled 9:00 am to 12:00 pm June 15 through June 19.
It’s personal. It’s meaningful. And it’s creative.
Students’ choices matter in this workshop to help fully engage students in their creative processes. They’ll experience structured activities, designed to build an appreciation for attention to details and to stretch their ability to translate written descriptions of themselves into visual imagery and fun symbology. This approach encourages respect for artistic expressions, reflections, and the creativity of artists in the larger art world and their classmates within their ShapeShifter classroom community.
Lurlynn Franklin, 25+ Years as an Arts Educator
Lurlynn Franklin is an artist, writer, arts advocate, and an art educator born and currently residing in Memphis. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Minot State University and a master’s in Studio Painting and art education from Memphis College of Art. Since the age of 16, she has been a visual artist and muralist. Franklin has exhibited as a solo artist and in group shows locally, regionally and nationwide. Through her works she tells stories by merging her experiences and stories through societal commentary.
An arts educator, having taught on the elementary, middle school and high school level for over 25 years, she has held visual artist and muralist residencies with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Junior Achievement of Memphis, The Memphis Black Arts Alliance, Delta State University, and University of Tennessee at Martin. She is the 2023 recipient of Arts Memphis’ Emmett O’Ryan Award for Artistic Inspiration.
