A New Voice for Parkinson’s in Memphis: A Nonprofit Advancing Awareness, Advocacy & Research Funding

This blog was written by Alan and Tara Compton

Hey everyone! We’re Alan and Tara Compton, co-founders of Grind City Parkinson’s Project (GCPP), a new Memphis-based nonprofit dedicated to raising awareness of Parkinson’s disease, bringing our community together through advocacy and connection, and raising funds to support Parkinson’s research.

Why Did We Start a Parkinson’s Nonprofit?

For us, Parkinson’s disease isn’t just a cause. It’s personal.

  1. Alan was diagnosed with Young Onset Parkinson’s Disease in 2024. Although Alan was 50 at the time of his diagnosis, he was still considered to have Young Onset Parkinson’s Disease (YOPD). Most people are diagnosed in their late 60s, 70s, or 80s, making a diagnosis at 50 a very different experience.
  2. In early 2026, Tara’s longtime work partner and close friend was also diagnosed with YOPD at just 44 years old. Watching someone else we love receive the same life-changing diagnosis made the need for connection, awareness, and support feel even more personal.
  3. Parkinson’s disease is the fastest-growing neurological disease in the world, and there is currently no cure. Research continues to bring hope for better treatments and, ultimately, a cure. But research requires funding.

At that point, the idea of starting a nonprofit became more than just an idea. We knew we needed to do something to help.

The Mission

Our mission is to create a stronger, more connected community for individuals and families affected by Parkinson’s disease while raising funds for research that can lead to better treatments and, ultimately, a cure.

We want GCPP to be a place where people affected by Parkinson’s feel seen, supported, connected, and empowered. We also want to bring Parkinson’s awareness into the Mid-South community and show that there is a large, passionate group of people ready to move, advocate, and make a difference.

GCPP recently launched its first fundraising initiative, the Grind City Hustle Virtual 5K. This event gives participants across the Mid-South and beyond the opportunity to get moving, raise awareness, fundraise, and show their support for the Parkinson’s community. Whether you walk, run, or simply participate in your own way, every step helps us build awareness and support Parkinson’s research.

And this is just the beginning.

Our vision for 2027 is to expand GCPP through additional community events, fundraising initiatives, advocacy efforts, and opportunities to bring people affected by Parkinson’s together. We’re excited about what’s ahead, but most importantly, we’re grateful for everyone who chooses to be part of this journey with us.

If you or someone you love is on a Parkinson’s journey or if you just enjoy supporting a good cause, follow us on our socials. We also have a donation page on our website if you’d like to individually donate to helping find a cure!
