Indie Memphis is in full effect and we have your guide for its return to the big screen here in the 901. Happening Nov. 14- 17th at different theaters across the 901, we got you covered on all things you need to know for the festivals.

OPENING NIGHT FILM

Opening Night of Indie Memphis is always a treat. Directed by journalist and filmmaker Dream Hampton, the film offers a very intimate look into the Golden Era of hip hop, the 1990s. The film pulls from her own personal archives and gives a look that you truly won’t be able to see from anyone else. Opening night takes place Thursday night at Crosstown Theater.

Films for everyone

Indie Memphis is a film festival that truly has something for everyone. Whether it be films made for all ages, animation, short films, music videos, it’s truly an experience open to all. Below is a full list of films broken down into each of their specific categories so you can find what’s perfect for you!

Centerpiece Film

This year’s centerpiece film is sponsored by Molly and Jason Wexler, the president of the Memphis Grizzlies, and it’s a based on Pulitzer Prize winning novel of the same name. Nickel Boys is directed by RaMell Ross and tells the powerful story of a friendship between two black teenagers going to reform school in Florida.

Check out the trailer above and be sure to check out the film at Indie Memphis on Sunday @ 6:30PM.

Workshops FOR THE FUTURE

Two people look at a camera; one holds it while the other observes, perhaps capturing a moment related to the Memphis Grizzlies. They're in an indoor setting with a screen in the background.

One of the coolest parts about Indie Memphis is their commitment to also helping out the next generation of filmmakers, from workshops for youth about directing, or other workshops for adults as well that include information on Crowdfunding films. These are free and open to the public, all that usually is required is an RSVP or a registration to let them know you’re coming!

This year, Indie Memphis is looking to showcase the growing film scene here in the 901 and it is definitely the spot to be this upcoming weekend! Be sure to follow them on Instagram for all updates on the festival and to stay connected with them year round!

See y’all there Memphis!
