901 Day is just the start: 5 ways to serve Memphis this September

This blog was written by Caroline Norris // Volunteer Odyssey

September opens with 901 Day, the one day a year Memphis says out loud what it feels all the time. 🌆 Pride in our neighborhoods, our people, and this city we keep choosing.

One day is a good start. A month is better. These five opportunities all have spots open, and each one puts you shoulder to shoulder with neighbors doing the work. 🤲

Friday, September 11, Friday, September 18, and Wednesday, September 30 | 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Memphis Inner City Rugby just opened a new rugby complex on South Orleans Street, and home games need all hands. Volunteers can film the action, set up the field, run water to players, or handle take-down and cleanup after the final whistle. No rugby experience required, which is the whole point: MICR wants people who show up for their athletes, not people who know the rulebook. Open to teens and older.

Thursday, September 10 and Friday, September 11 | Multiple Shifts Available

This year marks the 25th anniversary of September 11, and Memphis is one of more than 50 cities hosting a large-scale meal-packing event. Event support volunteers are the backbone of the day: leading packing teams as table captains, keeping supplies moving, welcoming volunteers at registration, and setting up or breaking down the space. Set-up runs Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with the main event Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers must be 18 or older. Food, water, and a t-shirt are provided.

Friday, September 18 | 6 to 9 p.m.

The Lakeland Senior Center is throwing its first Masquerade Dinner Dance at the IH Clubhouse, complete with a catered meal and DJ. Volunteers help make an enchanting evening run smoothly for guests who have earned a night of dining, dancing, and delightful surprises. Glamorous, whimsical, or mysterious masks are all fair game!

Saturday, September 19 | 8:30 a.m. to noon

Preschoolers run, bike, and swim through a fire truck spray to the finish line, where every single one gets a medal. Germantown Parks and Recreation needs volunteers at C.O. Franklin Park for set-up and take-down, late packet pick-up, the start and finish line, bike transition, refreshments, and, best of all, cheerleading. Volunteers must be 16 or older.

Monday, September 21 | 4hr Shifts starting at 11:30am & 4:30pm

Help put on this golf tournament at TPC Southwind and make every swing count! This charity event benefits the restoration and preservation of the historic Mount Carmel Cemetery, the final resting place of Memphis hero Tom Lee and many other influential figures who helped shape our community.

901 Day is one date on the calendar, but choosing Memphis is a habit. Ⓜ️ Volunteering is how that pride turns into something your neighbors can actually feel.
